Brown Rock Salt vs White Rock Salt

Rock Salt Brown Vs White

A question that comes up regularly is “what’s the difference?” between the Brown & White Rock Salt.

Well first and maybe most importantly, the price – Brown is between 5-10% cheaper than White depending on bag size & distribution method.

White Rock Salt is a naturally cleaner product than the brown. Brown can leave a residue and discolour carpets. We would recommend white salt for anywhere with heavy foot traffic that leads indoors e.g. pathways at schools, universities & care homes.

Brown Rock Salt is however much more practical for use on larger surface areas such as roads, car parks & transport yards as it is grittier which gives better traction for vehicles as soon as its spread. It is also more visible than white, making it easier to evenly distribute – you don’t want to spend any more time than you have to working out where you’ve spread it.

White Rock Salt is a finer product and we strongly recommend for use with most salt spreaders as it is less likely to clog the spreader and won’t require regular maintenance & rigorous cleaning – which is no fun on those freezing cold winter mornings!

Both are an 100% natural product however they originate from different places. Brown is mined in the UK and imported from similar climates. White Rock Salt is a marine salt imported from hotter climates such as Spain & Egypt. Marine salt is not the same as table salt – it is the crystallised minerals left when sea water evaporates. When used correctly White Salt is beneficial to plants & is often used in feritlisers & animal feeds. It can also be used for fish bait.
